Crash on Mount Lemmon kills high school student

09:31 PM MST on Monday, August 11, 2008

By Delane Cleveland, Fox 11 News

Monday, August 11 was a somber opening day of classes at Catalina Magnet High School. A young man who would have started his senior year is dead, and another student faces serious charges in his death.

It was early on Sunday morning, August 10, as five students were returning from an outing on Mount Lemmon, when at milepost 13 the car went out of control and flipped several times. Authorities say drugs and alcohol were involved.

The 1992 Honda Civic rolled over at about 4:25 a.m. on Sunday after passing vehicles in a no-passing zone while speeding. The crash killed 17-year old Shane Harvey.

Freelance photographer Andreas Hohl caught the aftermath on tape. He usually charges several hundred dollars for video, but he’s this time he’s giving it out free of charge. “There’s a message to be sent with this footage, and it’s basically, teens, drugs, booze and driving don’t mix,” he says.

17-year old Joseph Garcia was driving the vehicle and has been booked into the Pima County Jail, charged with second-degree murder. Meantime, Shane’s high school friends and former teammates on the football team are left to deal with the death of someone taken much too soon.

“It was a downer day, the first day of school is like that, but it just made it worse knowing that a friend of yours has died,” says Catalina student James Stevens. Stevens played football with Shane during their freshman year at Catalina. “He was a cool guy, and I was proud to be friends with him,” says Stevens. “It makes you think. It makes you want to actually live, you know what I mean?”

Of the three other passengers in the car, Sheriff’s Deputies say two have been released from the hospital, and the third will be released shortly.
