Parents want answers in unsolved murder
09:25 PM MST on Wednesday, August 20, 2008
It was a crime that shocked Tucsonans – a man visiting from out of town was shot in cold blood, apparently at the hands of Tucson gang members. Now, the victim’s parents are in town, looking for clues, information and justice.
Nick Arnold was shot to death three-and-a-half years ago. The crime is still unsolved, but his family hopes that a little effort will bring his killer to justice.
February 6, 2005 was a day when millions watched the Patriots beat the Eagles in Super Bowl XXXVIIII. But for Candy Arnold, Super Bowl Sunday will always remind her of her son Nick’s death. “My son was murdered here three years ago, and we’re trying to get some answers,” she says.
20-year old Nick Arnold was a 6’4”, 350-pound offensive lineman for Western New Mexico University. “He was just a big, giving soul,” says Candy. That weekend he paid a visit to Tucson with friends. Early Sunday morning, they made their way to a west side restaurant. It was the wrong place, at the wrong time, in the wrong car.
“It was a car that belonged to one of his classmates that was in the car with him, and they believe while Nick and his friend were at school, something happened in this vehicle,” says Candy. Whatever happened was enough for the shooters to riddle the car with 17 bullets. “He was killed instantly by a gunshot, and I believe it was to the head,” says Candy.
The case is still unsolved, which is what brings Raymond and Candy Arnold back to Tucson from their California home for the second time, armed with fliers and a $6,000 reward. “I think something’s going to come up out of this, this time,” says Candy.
So flier by flier, Candy makes her way through Tucson, hoping someone, somewhere, knows something that will help catch her son’s killer. “If we have to come back every 6 months, every 3 months, every two months, whatever it takes, we’re going to come back until this is taken care of,” she says.
Over the past five years in Tucson, out of nearly 300 homicides, over 30% are unsolved. Anyone with tips on the case should call 88-CRIME.
