Arizona delegates enjoying Democratic Convention

09:55 PM MST on Wednesday, August 27, 2008

By Delane Cleveland, Fox 11 News

While the state of Arizona may be home to the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, other Arizonans are standing proud this week at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The Arizona delegates brought their 67 votes to the convention, but aside from the votes, delegates and political leaders also brought with them a feeling of privilege during this historic nomination process on the Democrats’ largest stage.

“It’s historic,” says Democratic Representative Raul Grijalva. “It’s a turning point in our nation, and a lot of people are very fortunate and privileged to be here.” They feel privileged to play their role in the nomination process in the very state that will produce Barack Obama’s Republican opponent, Senator John McCain.

Governor Janet Napolitano delivered a speech on day 2 of the convention that was also part history lesson. “Arizonans are also proud of their political tradition,” she said. “From Barry Goldwater, to Mo Udall, to Bruce Babbitt, there’s a pattern here.” Each of them ran for President, and each lost. “This is one Arizona tradition I’d like to see continue,” said Napolitano.

That sentiment was echoed by those in the Arizona Democratic delegation. “We are so proud of our Governor,” said Arizona delegate Jojene Mills. “She’s done such a phenomenal job.”

For Napolitano to get her wish, Congressman Grijalva says Obama has to echo Hillary Clinton’s message of party unity when he addresses the crowd on Thursday. “I think he needs to talk about unity, but I think you can’t forget the theme that got him here,” said Grijalva. “And the theme that got him here is the fundamental need of this nation to change.”

Congressman Grijalva says Senator McCain currently has a five point lead in Arizona, but he says the party will work hard this fall to take Arizona for Senator Obama.
