Halloween safety tips offered
08:41 PM MST on Monday, October 20, 2008
With Halloween just over a week away, The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the Northwest Fire District are offering the following safety tips for trick-or-treating and other Halloween activities:
- Parents should make sure to inspect all treats before they are eaten and throw away anything that looks suspicious.
- Any homemade candy or baked goods received as treats should be discarded.
- Parents of small children should remove any choking hazards such as gum, peanuts, hard candies or small toys.
- Parents should make sure that children can walk, see, and be seen in their costumes.
- Children should carry flashlights to help motorists see them.
- If older children go trick-or-treating unsupervised, insist that they stay in their own neighborhood and on an agreed upon route.
- Children should always go out with a friend, group, or an adult, never alone.
- Children should only go to houses with lights on or houses displaying Halloween decorations.
- Select flame-resistant costumes, wigs, beards, and other apparel.
- Avoid candles in Jack-O’Lanterns or decorations, and use electric or battery power instead.
