Pet owners urged to get animals vaccinated
07:46 PM MST on Thursday, November 6, 2008
With two recent rabies cases reported in the area, the Pima Animal Care Center is urging pet owners to have their animals vaccinated against rabies. Within the past week, a domestic dog tested positive for rabies and a fox was found to be rabid.
“This is a good news/bad news scenario,” said Pima County Chief Veterinarian Bonnie Lilley. “The public is doing a really good job of bringing these sick animals to our attention. However it also demonstrates how critical it is to vaccinate our domestic pets against rabies.”
According to figures from the Arizona Department of Health Services, Pima County leads the state in laboratory confirmed rabies positive animals, most of them bats and skunks.
