Veterans hopeful for help from new Administration
07:27 PM MST on Tuesday, November 11, 2008
What was once known as “Armistice Day” was started to remember World War I, which ended on the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. Today we call it “Veterans Day,” when we pause to honor and thank all Veterans who have sacrificed to protect the nation.
This year, the day when people pay their respects and remember and be thankful came one week after the nation’s citizens performed one of our most important protected rights – voting. In the election, Barack Obama was overwhelmingly elected President over decorated war hero John McCain.
While not too many veterans were interested in talking politics on Veterans Day, those who did speak with Fox 11 News say they’re excited for what the new administration will bring.
Hundreds of people crowded the grounds of the V.A. Medical Center for a Veterans Day celebration featuring those who fought in Vietnam and World War II. Some danced, while others enjoyed the festivities from their wheelchairs.
Soon, loved ones who are deployed overseas will serve in a military led by a new Commander-In-Chief, Barack Obama. “The first thing I’m hoping for and expecting from him is leadership,” says Major General John Custer, the Commander of Fort Huachuca. Leadership regarding what happens with Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as Veterans issues.
“I was very happy to see our first lady-elect say that one of her top three issues is going to be Veterans and Veterans’ families,” says Custer. Americans have four years to see just how President Obama will handle Veterans issues. And with the election over, some Veterans say they are ready to see the new President make good on his promises.
“He said it’s not going to happen overnight, but I think we can look forward to some change and benefits from this experience,” says Richard Lemons, a Vietnam Veteran. He says a lot of other Vietnam Vets that he knows suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and he’s hopeful that the Obama Administration will put a greater emphasis on treating people with similar ailments.
