Tucson Police to crack down on violent crime

09:33 PM MST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

By Jim Edwards, Fox 11 News

The city of Tucson and the Tucson Police Department are launching a new effort to address the increase the number of murders in the city by working to combat activity that can be a precursor to aggravated assault and homicide. Police Chief Kermit Miller has ordered the Force Command Squads and the Crimes Against Persons Division Surveillance Squad to focus on deterring large gatherings, loud parties, juvenile violations and other problem areas that can lead to violent crime.

In addition, the Gang Outreach Unit will partner with local schools and other community groups to educate youth through presentations highlighting the dangers of certain behaviors where the potential for violence exists. Police are asking citizens to help in the effort by calling 911 if they observe any suspicious activity or become aware of large gatherings.
