Obama Adminstration tabs Napolitano for Cabinet post

10:28 PM MST on Thursday, November 20, 2008

By Deanna Morgan, Fox 11 News

The leak from the Obama Transition Team came on Wednesday, November 19, that the President-elect’s choice for Secretary of Homeland Security is Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano. That’s how they’ve been dealing with Cabinet appointments – leak the name, and then check out reaction.

Fox 11 News checked out the reaction as well, and found it is mostly positive, although the announcement angered some people. “You might as well put Barney the Purple Dinosaur in charge of homeland security,” said Chris Simcox of the Minuteman Civil Defense Group.

Frank Sharry, the Executive Director of the immigration advocacy group America’s Voice strongly disagreed. “We think it’s an inspired choice,” he said. “A border state Governor, someone who really understands border security, someone who also understands the need for comprehensive immigration reform.”

Former Arizona Senator Dennis Deconcini said it will be a big job for her to tackle. “That job is the biggest one of all the Cabinet, bigger than the State Department,” he said.

Paul Allvin, Napolitano’s Manager of Communication during her first term, feels Napolitano has the credentials to head the Department of Homeland Security. “We used to joke with her that she made a good wartime Governor,” he said.

However Simcox says the Governor has done little to protect Arizona’s border. “The Obama Administration could have made a much more qualified choice,” he said. “Human trafficking, sex slave trade, weapons, money laundering, it’s out of control. Will Napolitano be the one that can solve it? We can only hope.”

Sharry says the choice will be criticized by both sides. “On the left side, some are going to say she’s been too tough. On the right, some are going to say she’s too soft. That’s why I think she’s a good choice,” he says.

Napolitano also received support from Senator John McCain, who congratulated the Governor on being offered the position, and in a statement, vowed to work closely with her through the process.
