Napolitano, Brewer pledge smooth Ariz. transition

PHOENIX (AP) -- Arizona's departing and incoming governors pledged Monday to work together on a smooth transition for the good of the state.
President-elect Barack Obama has selected Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano to be homeland security secretary, and her departure would put Republican Secretary of State Jan Brewer in the governor's office.
Napolitano and Brewer made brief statements about their changing roles after participating in the official canvass of Nov. 4 general election results.
Napolitano said she doesn't plan to resign until after her appointment is confirmed by the U.S. Senate. She says that delay in her departure will provide time for a smooth transition.
Brewer says she and Napolitano will meet later this week to discuss transition plans.
