Oregon school bus spotted at strip club stirs controversy
12:55 PM MST on Tuesday, May 22, 2007
Oregon - Ever wonder what school buses do in their free time? At least one of them was at a strip club on Saturday.
It turns out, you can rent a school bus for an event such as a bachelor party.
Last weekend, witnesses watched in amusement as a half-dozen motorists pulled over to observe the site of several young men leaving a Portland-marked school bus, filing into a strip club.
Headed west bound on southeast stark, Jennifer Miller and her husband couldn't believe their eyes.
“School bus outside Club 205. My husband and I both go 'what's going on?'”
They snapped a photo on their cell phone. It shows a Portland school bus. On the other side, a group of young men file into the adjacent strip club.
“It didn't feel right.”
As a tax payer and mother of two girls, Miller is a little concerned about seeing a Portland-marked bus in this context.
Portland Public Schools say there’s nothing to worry about. Although i t was an unusual sight, there was a perfectly business-like explanation.
“We just want to reassure people that is not your tax dollars at work,” said district spokeswoman Sarah Carlin Ames.
She says even a bus that says Portland on it still belongs to Laidlaw, a private contractor.
Laidlaw tells us it's been doing this for a decade. It advertises charter bus rentals on it's web site, including illustrations of seating charts.
It promises a great value for 'group transportation needs.'
“But it does create an image question, I think, for people. No question,” said Carlin Ames.
Miller urges Laidlaw and the district to make sure the buses are clean after strip club use.
“I think it's disgusting,” said Miller.
And she suggests disguising the name on the bus if it's off school duty.
“You know one of those magnet signs to plunk over the Laidlaw.”
The district says it'll talk to Laidlaw about being more subtle.
“It's still a big yellow school bus so it screams school bus to everybody.”
Laidlaw points out their charter service is less expensive than most and it gets a lot of would-be drunk drivers off the road.
