Father arrested in death of diabetic Cabazon teenager

03:46 PM MST on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

California - Parents of a 17-year-old diabetic Cabazon girl have been charged with child endangerment and murder after the girl died of diabetes complications.

Although the daughter, Nanette Latham, is not identified by name in the criminal complaint filed June 4 in Riverside County Superior Court, an arrest warrant declaration identifies her and details the circumstances leading up to her death in April.

Nanette's father, Gregory Lee Latham Sr., 60, was arrested Monday and booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Bail was set at $1 million, according to sheriff's booking information. Her mother, Yvonne Dee Latham, 50, has not been arrested.

The criminal complaint lists the victim only as Jane Doe, but the dates in the complaint mirror time references in the arrest warrant.

The arrest warrant alleges the parents ignored neighbors' advice to get Nanette to medical care when she became ill. When her mother noticed Nanette had stopped breathing several days after she became ill, family members administered CPR while waiting for paramedics April 15.

Nanette had to be resuscitated en route to San Gorgonio Pass Hospital in Banning and later was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she became comatose and was on life-support before she died, according to the warrant.

Riverside County sheriff's investigators found squalid living conditions in the motor home on Ella Avenue. The motor home was described as filthy, cluttered with trash, smelling of feces and lacking electricity. Nanette wore a diaper because she had a bedwetting problem, her father told investigators, according to the warrant.

Nanette checked her own blood sugar and administered her own insulin shots until she became ill, when her father began the checks and injections, investigators learned from interviews with family, according to the warrant.

The San Gorgonio hospital suspected child abuse and alerted the county's Child Protective Services, which removed two other children from the home based on the living conditions.

The parents were described as showing no emotion when told of Nanette's comatose condition.

"Gregory Sr. and Yvonne were offered a ride to Loma Linda Hospital and refused," according to the warrant, and "reluctantly agreed to arrange transportation to meet with hospital staff."

Two Loma Linda doctors declared Nanette brain dead and she died April 18 after being removed from life support, according to the warrant.

Ingrid Wyatt, Riverside County district attorney's office spokeswoman, was out of town Tuesday when reached by phone. She was not sure why the criminal complaint didn't list the victim's name in this specific case, but said not including the name is normal in certain cases involving juvenile victims.

A county sheriff's spokesman did not return an e-mail or telephone page seeking comment.
