Arizona pilot injured after hot air balloon catches fire

09:02 AM MST on Tuesday, July 3, 2007

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) -- An Arizona man was injured when a hot air balloon he was piloting caught fire after landing in a yard near a home during a nearby air show competition, authorities said.

Gary Moore, 51, of Lake Havasu City, was treated at a Battle Creek, Mich. hospital for burns to both arms following the Monday evening fire, Battle Creek Enquirer reported. His passenger, Todd Leatherman, 41, of East Leroy, was not hurt.

They were competing in the Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show and Balloon Festival at W.K. Kellogg Airport, about 120 miles west of Detroit.

Pilots were trying to land at targets when winds changed, causing many to look for other landing sites.

Witnesses said Moore landed in a yard near a home, and residents took photographs of the landing and fire. Water from a wading pool was dumped on the fire to put it out. The cause was under investigation.
