Missouri town passes saggy pants law
12:19 PM MST on Tuesday, November 13, 2007
(KMOV) - The City of Pine Lawn is sending its residents a warning that if pants are not pulled up, they will have to pay a price.
AP
Police tell KMOV-TV News that parents of young offenders could face big fines, because saggy pants is now illegal in the city.
The city council passed the new law on pants Monday evening.
The law authorizes police to slap offenders with $100 fines.
Pine Lawn's mayor says business developers suggested that the law will improve Pine Lawn's “sagging” image, and will encourage businesses to move in and keep children out of trouble.
KMOV-TV News is told Pine Lawn will first hand out warnings before issuing any fines, and that a recently-imposed curfew designed to keep minors off the streets at night is working.
While I absolutely hate how this looks on people and I think it's the most ridiculous fad to come out I don't think the law makers should step in and tell people what they can & can't wear. It is a form of expression and a freedom we should not take for granted. I also think the lawmakers should focus their time, energy, money, & resources on more important issues that are going on around us all then on someone's baggy britches......
It's the latest fad - this too shall pass. I think it's comical to see those youngsters trying to hurry across the street having to keep both hands in their pockets to keep from losing their pants! If they could see themselves on videocamera to see how ridiculous they look, I think they'd wear tighter clothes, but who knows? My generation's parents probably thought the same thing about bell-bottom jeans that drag the ground and hip-hugger pants with body shirts. I yearn for the preppy look to come back in...
Dressing appropriately IN PUBLIC signifies that you respect others' expectations and rights and not just your own. Society implies social--being among others. I adjust my clothing and volume in music/talk when I leave my home out of respect for others who may not share my likes. I expect others to show consideration when in public. At Circuit City last week, a car was bellowing the rap music. I felt angry and violated as a woman and U.S. citizen. To confront the type that blares these offensive lyrics is probably not in my best interests. Who then stands up for me? Or do I have the right to do the same?
I hope all of these "cool" guys realize that sagging your pants was started in prison when gay guys wanted to let other men know they were "available" Not so cool now are ya!
God Bless any community that will stand up to these obnoxious style of dressing.
one more reason to harrass these young men. Yes it's ugly and a tacky style. But what about hot pants, what about thong shoes, mini skirts, halter tops, big fat necked bellies, cracks from low waist paints. These teens have too much stress opposed to when we we're teens, not everybody is thinking about thier attire. Let's pray this style eventually goes away. Leave them alone.
I think this is the absolute dumbest looking thing I have ever seen. I wish that every where would ban baggy pants like this. What's the point? It also makes kids look like bad kids.. I guess maybe that's what they want?? DUMB...
Now if we could only get rid of thugs, brainless morons and politicians, this place would be paradise!
All I seem to hear every day about the war on terror is that we are fighting for the American way of life .. for democracy... for freedom. This law doesn't seem like freedom to me. In fact, it seems to be similar to a law that exists in most Middle Eastern countries, i.e. women must be fully clothed and not show any skin. I didn't realize the Taliban was running things in Pine Lawn. The idiots that passed this law are all part of the Baby Boomer generation and they couldn't be more hypocrytical if they tried. How did these people feel when they were teenagers and they were criticized for wearing bell bottom jeans? On top of all that, this law seems to be racist in nature. Will this law against saggy pants also apply to women who wear low-cut jeans to show off their underwear? Of course not, because the people passing the laws are mostly men ... perverted men at that. Can we also introduce a law against pants that are pulled up too high? Yes, I am talking to all you grandparents out there. I think that look is stupid too, but we are supposed to live in the land of the free and we are all entitled to do, say, and wear what we want.
IF YOURE GOING TO DO THE SAGGINH PANTS WHAT ABOUT THE GREEN,ORANGE,PURPLE,PINK ETC., HAIR!? WHAT ABOUT HE CRAZY HAIR CUT,THE NOSE,TOE, TONGUE ECT. RINGS. WHAT ABOUT ALL THIS KILLING GOING ON THE HOMELESS, THE ABUSED, THE EDUCATION OF OUR CHILDREN. YES THE SAGGY PANTS ARE UGLY AND REALLY DOESN"T MAKE ANY SENSE, AND I WISH THEY WOULD PULL THEM UP BUT, THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT LAWS NEEDED TO BE PASSED. THIS ONE IS STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!
Ammendment 1 - Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech (read EXPRESSION).
The most basic component of freedom of expression is the right of freedom of speech. The right to freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves without interference or constraint by the government. The Supreme Court requires the government to provide substantial justification for the interference with the right of free speech where it attempts to regulate the content of the speech. A less stringent test is applied for content-neutral legislation. The Supreme Court has also recognized that the government may prohibit some speech that may cause a breach of the peace or cause violence. The right to free speech includes other mediums of expression that communicate a message. Excerpted from - http://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/index.php/First_amendment
it just looks plain silly
AM SO TIRED OF SEEING DRAWS, AT WORK, AND EVERY WERE I GO. I HOPE THEY PASS THAT LAW IN EVERY CITY
I think people are nuts, thats what I think. All the major problems going on in our society and people are worried about droopy drawers. My god people get a life. If you don't like it don't look. I am sick to death of all these stupid little laws that keep passing. The bad thing is there are idiots out there who actually vote against this stupid petty stuff. Can you say communism? Cause that is where this country is headed. Telling us where we can smoke, where can drink, what we can't/can wear. Where does it end?
I think the Mayor should spend time on more important things than saggy pants, like how to keep crime to a minimum among other criminal activity in that municipality. While the saggy pants style is ridiculous, what's the next law against: dreadlocks, twisted hairstyles, braids, or gold in the mouth? This pointing out a certain group of people. Let's see if kids start sagging (if not already)in Ladue, Kirkwood, and South county have a law passed on that. I'm offended by people with too many holes in their ear and nose, excessive tattos, wearing black lipstick (etc.), black hair, spiked hair, or even wearing pants too long while walking over the pants legs. Let's see if a law will be made against that. It's just another way of trying to control a certain group of people.
Saggy pants shows lack of respect and just plain looks stupid, so I guess looking stupid is in? For those who thinks it's cool, enjoy your future washing dishes for 2 bucks an hour.
Whether or not you like the idea of pants being worn low is besides the point. View the law at face value: "The govenment is now dictating the manor in which people wear their pants". Not only is the idea that the "Man" can tell you how to dress insane, what about the slippery slope ramifications this law will have. Ask yourself, if they can do this then what is next? Are they going to outlaw clothes that fit too tight because they are of a sexually suggestive nature? What about clevage? And what is to become of swimsuits? Isn't swimwear basically just exposed underwear being worn in a socially accepted context? Americans' freedoms are being snatched up one by one. The only reason there is no outcry over this increase in control is because is it not happening at a quick enough pase for us to really notice. The heat is slowly being turned up and this trend will continue for as long as you let it. Don't be walked on. Stand up for your rights or they will be taken from you.
This is a very good idea. But will it work?
I see these boys with pants hanging to their knees and its quite hysterical. I think the law is great and I live in Illinois. I have a 4 year old little boy and I sure hope he doesn't want to ever wear his pants that way. It will not be tolerated in my home. These kids were not raised this way. Parents better pay attention to what type of behavior this dress code is giving and for the girls!!!!! Pull your shirts down. NOBODY cares if your belly button is pierced or not. You look as ridiculous as the boys and don't sit and twirl your tongue at me cause I DON'T care if your tongue is pierced neither. ITS ALL SICKENING!!!!!!!! What happened to the good ole' days???????????
This law is crazy.
What country are we in anyways?
Yes the saggy pants look terrible, but as long as the "American" people that wear them aren't exposing themselves, then the rest of use just have to endure it and hope the fad will pass.
Whats next? Mandatory Burks. You can not tell people what to wear. That goes against all American beliefs. Something comes to mind here.
Maybe the first amendment "Freedom of Expression--Speech and Press".
Wake up LEMMINGS. This is just one more freedom the government is trying to take away from us.
This law has to be challenged in the courts.
