Tucson fire displaces 13 from homes
08:26 AM MST on Wednesday, April 16, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Thirteen Tucson residents have been displaced by a small brush fire that spread to a home and an adjacent duplex.
Tucson fire Capt. Norm Carlton said the Tuesday fire appears to have started in brush and plastic toys near a fence between the two buildings. The cause was not immediately known.
Firefighters put out the blaze within 45 minutes of arriving at the scene, but Carlton said an estimated $250,000 in damage had been done.
He said the house could be a total loss.
Carlton said the strong winds caused the flames to spread quickly and move upward into the attics of both buildings. "Any kind of an attic fire is much harder to control," he said
The Red Cross was called to give the 13 displaced residents shelter, clothes and toiletries, he said.
