RIAA drops music-copyright claims
09:54 AM MST on Monday, April 21, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Copyright infringement claims have been dismissed for all but two of 14 University of Arizona students accused by recording companies of illegally downloading music.
The Recording Industry Association of America subpoenaed personal information about the students from the UA, which provided them with Internet service.
The school complied, releasing information for 10 of the students on April 10, but withheld information about two students because they had come to a settlement with the industry.
The UA also withheld personal information about two other students who had filed motions in federal court to dismiss copyright suits.
However, how useful the university information might be is debatable since the UA keeps user information only for a few weeks for capacity reasons.
The only information retained are the first and last dates a user is logged on the network. As a result, with multiple users sharing a network, it can be unclear who downloads what and when.
