Woman in SUV crash dies at hospital after giving birth
05:59 PM MST on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The pregnant woman rushed to the hospital by helicopter after her SUV collided with a semi-truck on Highway 224 late last month has died, but her baby survived after an emergency C-section, authorities said.
Doctors were able to successfully deliver Courtney Corbett's baby at Legacy Emanuel Hospital a short time after the crash and the 22-year-old mother was listed in "very serious" condition after the birth, according to Trooper Jason Lindland.
Then, just over two weeks after the April 22 crash, police confirmed that Corbett had died at the hospital. They said her baby, a boy, was in "good" condition.
The impact of the crash caused Corbett's SUV to get stuck under the semi-truck, where she was trapped and unconscious for 45 minutes.
Investigators believe the driver of the semi-truck, Paul Eastridge, 55, of Grants Pass, was trying to make a left turn onto eastbound Highway 224 from Pheasant Court when Corbett ran a red light and her SUV slammed into the side of his vehicle, just before 4 a.m.
Eastridge was not hurt in the crash, Lindland said.
Corbett was from Gladstone.
