State sells Phoenix site once considered for stadium
10:15 AM MST on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
PHOENIX (AP) -- A piece of state trust land in Phoenix once considered as a site for the Arizona Cardinals is for sale.
The land officially goes on the auction block next month with an asking price of $20 million.
"That's going to be a good auction," said Mark Winkleman, state land commissioner. "I expect several parties in attendance."
The L-shaped parcel is located just north of Loop 202 and is zoned for a mix of uses.
Single-family homes, condos and apartments would be allowed as well as retail under current zoning.
The Land Department decided to put the parcel up for sale rather than lease it because it is unclear how the winning bidder will choose to develop it, Winkleman said.
With a central location and close freeway access, the land was among the sites in 2000 under review for a new stadium for the Arizona Cardinals before Glendale was chosen.
A decade earlier, the land was considered for a baseball stadium for the new Arizona Diamondbacks, land officials said.
