Sabino Canyon fix holding despite heavy rain

10:23 AM MST on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Despite heavy rainfall, repairs inside Sabino Canyon are holding, Coronado National Forest officials said.

Recent rain sent flash floods through the tourist attraction in recent days, said Heidi Schewel, a Forest Service spokeswoman.

"We had some water over the weekend, but everything held up really well," Schewel said Monday.

The road that leads into the canyon has been repaved and strengthened in several spots since flooding damaged it in July 2006.

"Those reinforcements are holding," Schewel said.

As the monsoon season unfolds in the coming weeks, forest officials said they will watch the situation closely.

Some of the Sabino Canyon walls left bare by landslides two years ago have not been hit by heavy rain, which could send exposed rock tumbling across the road, officials said.

"There will be more water, but every indication now is that everything held up," Schewel said.

Two years ago, the Sabino Canyon road was washed out in several spots when more than 10 inches of rain fell over areas that feed the canyon.

The National Weather Service predicts a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms through Friday.
