Tucson settles hazing claim by former firefighter
08:31 AM MST on Friday, July 18, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A former Tucson firefighter has settled a claim with the city after he accused co-workers of daily harassment including tying him up with duct tape.
Adam Neal filed a notice of claim, the precursor to a lawsuit, March 7.
Neal said he endured daily abuse that his supervisors said was just part of his training.
The notice of claim suggests that near-daily name calling, pushing and punching was condoned by supervisors to the point that abusive behavior became the custom and norm at the Tucson Fire Department.
The claim said Neal received four days of inpatient treatment for depression after he reported his treatment to a supervisor and was told the abuse was a training tool to make (him) a better firefighter.
The $60,000 settlement was signed June 26 and released Thursday.
Tucson Fire Department spokesman Norm Carlton had no comment Thursday afternoon.
Neal's attorney, Ivelisse Bonilla, said she could not comment on the settlement amount because of a confidentiality agreement.
"My client just wants to put this behind him," she said.
Neal was not available for comment. He is no longer working as a firefighter, Bonilla said.
