PHOENIX (AP) -- A Highland High School marching band member killed by a suspected drunk driver was being remembered as someone who cared about people and was devoted to church.
Kelly Tracy, 16, was on her way to a Gilbert parade Saturday when the car she was in was hit by a Dodge Ram driven by Manuel Contreras-Galdean, 32, said Sgt. Ed Wessing, a spokesman for Mesa police.
Kelly's brother Matthew, 17, was driving the car she was in. He was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. His sister was also transported, but later died from severe head trauma.
Kelly's unexpected death has shaken her family.
"She was a beautiful person and full of talent," said Cindy Tracy, Kelly's mother.
"She loved people and cared about them, and she was very devoted to God."
At her school, a makeshift memorial formed a mile west of the crash site.
Near a side entrance, about 50 feet from the marching band's trailer, was a photo of Kelly, her hair pulled back as she played a xylophone.
A candle burned near Kelly's picture. Someone also left a teddy bear with a black Highland High baseball cap.
"In Memory of Kelly Tracy" was written in blue on white paper and taped to the brick exterior of a school building.
Monday was expected to be a tough day at school for Kelly's friends and classmates.
"The thing I remember most about her was her smile," said Ethan Baxley,18.
"She was open and welcome to anyone, and she had a positive attitude she would bring anytime and any place."
Contreras-Galdean was arrested and charged with one count of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault.
Contreras-Galdean was impaired, Wessing said.
Authorities also placed an immigration hold on Contreras-Galdean after it was determined he was in the country illegally.
