Tucson Man Shot by Deputy Identified
05:39 PM MST on Monday, March 3, 2008
Pima County Sheriff's deputies say 25-year-old Vincent Samuel Azzarello, a Tucson resident, shot twice at deputies on Friday afternoon in the Avra Valley. Deputy Matthew Salmon returned fire and killed Azzarello after a brief foot chase in the 5500 block of North Anway. Deputies say Azzarello beat up a woman in the Foothills District area and 2 deputies went to the Anway address to look for him. Investigators say Azzarello had several identification cards on him when he died. An autopsy on Sunday was able to confirm his identity. Deputy Salmon is recovering from an injury from a bullet which hit his chest and was stopped by a protective vest. The other deputy with Salmon was shot in the hand and is also recovering at a local hospital. Both deputies are on routine paid administrative leave.
