Seven suspected smugglers arrested in rival's slaying
04:19 PM MST on Friday, May 9, 2008
PHOENIX (AP) -- Seven people believed to be immigrant smugglers were arrested in the investigation of another suspected human trafficker whose body was set afire in an alley in south Phoenix.
Police say the victim, 26-year-old Aroldo Virsabi-Robles Gonzalez, was one of two immigrant smugglers who were kidnapped by rival smugglers eight days ago in Mesa and held for ransom.
The second victim was found Thursday in the closet of a south Phoenix home where police located the seven suspects. They were booked on suspicion of felony murder, kidnapping and smuggling.
Police reported more than 340 kidnappings last year in which drug and immigrant traffickers and their families were abducted by fellow criminals and held for big-dollar ransoms.
