Polygamist lawyer wants Ariz. court to drop incest charges
10:03 AM MST on Friday, May 16, 2008
KINGMAN, Ariz. (AP) -- Lawyers for imprisoned polygamist leader Warren Jeffs will ask a judge to drop incest charges Friday afternoon in a Mohave County, Ariz. courtroom.
The charges stem from two arranged marriages between teenage girls and their older male relatives. The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leader is charged as an accomplice in that case.
Jeffs' lawyers say incest charges should be dismissed because Arizona laws require both participants to be 18 years old or older.
If a judge agrees, Jeffs would still face charges as an accomplice to sexual conduct with a minor.
