ST. MARIES, Id--A three-year-old girl is in critical condition at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane after suspected abuse by her mother and live-in boyfriend that left the girl with dead flesh on her legs and arms.
Benewah County Sheriff's Office
Charles Smith and Christina Smith are charged with felony injury to a child.
Authorities learned of the abuse when the Benewah County Sheriff's Office got a call from a citizen who asked them to investigate Tuesday and a deputy went to the child's house in St. Maries.
Court documents obtained by KREM 2 NEWS say the deputy who found her took pictures of the child for evidence.
The pictures show a "small, blonde-haired child" with "blood on her butt and thighs... caked-on feces... feet dark, dead flesh from ankles to toes black... hands showed same... all over deep bruising of some kind... infection or internal bleeding... a large patch of blood on cheek."
The documents also said the girl "appeared to go in and out of consciousness."
Doctors told the deputy that the girl has a 50% chance of survival and that she would need multiple surgeries to remove dead flesh from her fingers and hands.
26-year-old Christina Haynes and 29-year-old Charles Smith have been charged with felony injury to a child. Both Haynes and Smith made their first court appearance today. Smith's bond was set at $250,000 and Haynes' bond was $200,000.
Haynes told the deputy that she met Smith on the internet and that she worked out of her home while Smith was alone with her daughter. The deputy said "both adults seemed very indifferent about the condition of the child."
A six-year-old girl was also taken from the home, but that child "appeared healthy." She is now with her father, who saw both girls three weeks ago and they "both appeared fine."
Court documents cited two possible causes for the victim's injuries: "trauma to flesh" or "lack of circulation... frost bite", but investigators were not sure of how the injuries occured.
The documents said that both Smith and Haynes caused or permitted the "health of the child to be injured... by severe neglect and deprivation of basic needs and medical care to the extent the child required emergency surgery to save her life."
The Benewah County Prosecutor told KREM 2 NEWS that authorities there have "never seen anything like this" type of abuse in recent memory.
KREM 2 NEWS is in St. Maries now gathering new information and will bring that to you on KREM.com this afternoon and on KREM 2 NEWS at 5:00 and 6:00.
