Pima County deputies rescue mom, 2 kids from fire
02:14 PM MST on Tuesday, October 7, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- A sheriff's spokeswoman in Pima County says deputies rescued a mother and two young children who were trapped in their burning home.
Deputy Dawn Hanke says deputies sent to the southwest Tucson home Monday evening found it on fire and neighbors trying to break in to free the family.
They could hear a woman inside yelling for help, but bars on the windows and doors kept deputies from getting inside.
One deputy managed to grab an 18-month-old child and squeeze her through a sliding glass door. Another hooked the winch of his patrol vehicle to the bars on the front door and ripped them off, freeing the mother and her 4-year-old son.
Hanke says security bars should have quick-release devices and everyone should know how they work.
