LONDON (AP) — Money is the key as representatives of the world's 17 biggest and most polluting nations gather today to search for a breakthrough on financing efforts to combat global warming.
Pressure has been mounting for the United States to finalize its position before a decisive December conference in Denmark meant to cap two years of negotiations on a global climate change treaty.
The Obama administration has said the pace of its action is determined by Congress, where climate bills are slowly making their way toward legislation. The argument cut little ice with other negotiators.
Asad Rehman of Friends of the Earth says new money is urgently needed from the rich countries of the Major Economies Forum. He says the effects of climate change "are already putting millions of lives at risk."
