LISBON, Portugal (AP) — A magnitude-6 earthquake has struck deep in the Atlantic Ocean, but officials say no tremors have been felt in the Azores Islands, the nearest land to the epicenter.
The National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colorado, says the temblor occurred 444 kilometers (276 miles) southwest of the Portuguese islands.
It struck at 6:41 p.m. (1941 GMT) Wednesday and was 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the surface of the ocean.
A magnitude-6 quake can cause severe damage, but an official with the Azores Civil Protection Service told The Associated Press by telephone that the quake was not felt on the archipelago.
