Missing US soldier's body found in Afghanistan

Posted on November 11, 2009 at 3:02 AM

KABUL (AP) — NATO forces say military divers have found the body of one of two U.S. soldiers who disappeared last week in western Afghanistan.

The two paratroopers disappeared in Badghis province, a remote area that borders Turkmenistan, on Nov. 4 while trying to recover airdropped supplies that had fallen into a river. NATO said Wednesday that the search for the second soldier was still ongoing.

Intense fighting broke out with militants in the area during the first days of the search. Eight Afghans were killed, while 17 Afghan troops and five American soldiers were wounded.

NATO and Afghan authorities are investigating whether some of the casualties were caused by a botched NATO airstrike.
