COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — An official says Sri Lanka's top general who led the battle to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels and ended the island's civil war has resigned from his post.
An official from the president office says the president's secretary received Gen. Sarath Fonseka's resignation letter Thursday. The official asked not to be named due to sensitivity of the issue.
The news comes amid growing media reports that Fonseka is planning to contest the next presidential election. Fonseka has not confirmed the media reports.
Fonseka as army commander masterminded the battle against Tamil rebels. Soon after the war's end in May, he was promoted as chief of defense staff which is a largely ceremonial post.
