THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court says he has asked judges for permission to open an investigation into post-election violence that left more than 1,000 people dead in Kenya.

Luis Moreno Ocampo says there is a "reasonable basis to believe that crimes against humanity" were commited.

Violence erupted after President Mwai Kibaki was controversially declared winner of elections in 2007 that the opposition claimed were rigged.

Many protesters who clashed with the police were killed, but the violence, which took place between December 2007 and February 2008, also erupted along tribal lines.

If judges allow Moreno Ocampo to open an investigation, it will be the fifth since the court started work in 2002. All of them are in Africa.
