SAN SALVADOR, EL Salvador (AP) — A strong earthquake has rocked El Salvador and parts of Guatemala, but no there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage in either country.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 5.9.

The USGS says it hit 31 miles (51 kilometers) southwest of Sonsonate, El Salvador.

Thursday afternoon's quake was felt as far away as Guatemala City. Civil protection officials in the two neighboring countries say they are still checking for reports of injuries or damage.
