PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Commandos in Pakistan have been battling fierce resistance in a raid on a militant compound near Peshawar.

One militant was killed and five others arrested.

The raid targeted a bombing cell accused in recent attacks. The northwestern Pakistani city is a main gateway to the Afghan border region where many al-Qaida and Taliban militants are based.

Militants have carried out a wave of deadly attacks in apparent retaliation for a Pakistan army offensive in the tribal area of South Waziristan.

Officials say the raid netted a cache of suicide jackets, as well as a number of bombs, grenades, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons.

Pakistani security forces also killed 13 suspected militants in gunbattles in two other parts of the volatile northwest region.
