SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Formal bilateral talks between the U.S. and North Korea begin Tuesday and the U.S. special envoy has gone over some ideas with South Korean officials.
Stephen Bosworth's three-day visit to Pyongyang will be the first formal meeting between the U.S. and the North since President Barack Obama took office in January.
The goal is to try to bring Pyongyang back to international nuclear talks and getting the regime to recommit to denuclearization.
Bosworth says starting the trip in South Korea is no accident, a remark seen as meaning that the two allies are working closely together.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports that Bosworth is expected to meet with North Korea's top nuclear strategist as well as North Korea's chief foreign policy brain.
North Korea has been pushing for direct talks with the U.S.
