Brazil thieves tunnel their way to nearly $6M

SAO PAULO (AP) — It was a weekend on which most of Brazil was transfixed by season-ending soccer matches.

It wasn't until after the games ended that a big theft was discovered. Six million dollars had been taken over the weekend by thieves who had spent months digging a tunnel from a rented house to an armored car copmany.

Investigators followed the tunnel from the company's safe to the house about 110 yards away.

The home, which had been occupied for about four months, was abandoned by the time police arrived. Police found bags of dirt in the house -- presumably from the digging.

A security guard at the building heard a loud noise yesterday afternoon, but figured it was from fireworks that soccer fans had been setting off.
