BERLIN (AP) — Germany's defense minister is making an unannounced visit to northern Afghanistan.
The Defense Ministry says Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg arrived at the German military base in Kunduz on Friday morning.
Guttenberg last week reassessed a German commander's decision to request a NATO airstrike near Kunduz in early September that is believed to have killed many civilians. He said he now believes it was "militarily inappropriate."
Germany has more than 4,000 troops serving in northern Afghanistan.
