VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Benedict XVI and the president of Vietnam have held long talks at the Vatican, amid reports that the Communist country is seeking diplomatic ties with the Holy See.

President Nguyen Minh Triet met with Benedict for 40 minutes Friday. It was the first time that the head of state of the Communist country met with the pope.

On the eve of the trip, Triet had told an Italian newspaper that his government is working to open diplomatic relation with the Vatican. Vietnam's 6 million Roman Catholics are the second largest Catholic community in Asia.
