Print a portion of a Web page

Q.  How can I print a portion of a Web page? I just want to print a couple of paragraphs, but I keep getting the whole thing. Thanks, Mr. M.

A.  If you only want to print specific text from an email, Web page, or other document, most printers will accommodate selective printing, so here’s how it is generally done. There may be some slight variations with your specific printer, however.

First, using your mouse, select (highlight) the text you would like to print by placing your mouse at the beginning of the text. While holding down the left mouse button, drag the cursor, kicking and screaming, to the end of the text you want to print. Release the left mouse button and the text will be highlighted.

Next, click File > Print. In the Print Range section of the Print window that appears, you will see the ability to check the word “Selection.” You can then proceed to print as you normally would and only your highlighted text will print.

Q.  I’ve got a bunch of files I need to delete. Can I delete them without sending them to the Recycle Bin first? It seems like a waste of time to have to delete them again from the Recycle Bin.

A.  Yes, you can do that, but keep in mind that the Recycle Bin provides a convenient safety net should you delete something and then have a change of heart. By opening the Recycle Bin and right-clicking a deleted item, you can select Restore and return the item to its original location. If you ever experience one of those deer-in-the-headlights moments when your life depends on your ability to restore a deleted item, it will give you a warm and fuzzy feeling to know that the Recycle Bin is there for you.

If, however, you want to circumvent “The Bin,” as we in The Biz call it, after selecting a file, hold down the SHIFT key and tap the DELete key. Windows will ask if you’re sure you want to delete it. If you respond in the affirmative, there will be no turning back, so if you have commitment issues, be forewarned.

If you do send your deleted items to the Recycle Bin, you do not have to delete them individually from that location, if that’s what you’re thinking -- now that it would be an exhausting task. Instead, simply right-click your Desktop Recycle Bin icon and select Empty Recycle Bin. Presto gonno!

Mr. Modem's Sites of the Week:

Artistic Tanks
When the unattractive world of industrialism collides with the beautiful world of art, the results can be seen at this Web site. Featuring photographs of large tanks (the type that hold oil, water or propane), these cylindrical canvases have been artistically transformed into objects more interesting than when they originally appeared on the landscape. Browse the gallery of such notable tanks as the “Jesus Propane Tank" in Ohio, the “Six-Pack Tank” in Wisconsin, and my personal favorite, the “Pig Oil Tank" in North Carolina. Each image has a map to its location, with latitude and longitude, for individuals desperately seeking something to do.
