Q. How can I remove individual entries from the Internet Explorer drop-down address list of Web sites previously visited?
Resources
A. Internet Explorer itself does not provide any way to edit or remove individual sites from this list which you can access by clicking the “down” arrow to the right of the Address field. A little utility named the Address URL Editor can do the job, however.
This handy tool allows you to delete the URLs individually or edit addresses entered incorrectly. You can also drag and drop a Web address to change its order in the list, use the DELete key to clear address items, use the INSert key to add a new URL, or use ALT + the arrow keys to move a selected URL.
After launching Address URL Editor, close Internet Explorer, then make your changes. After editing the URLs, press the Apply button to save your changes, re-open IE, and you will find the edited URLs list. A trial version is available and it’s $19.97 to purchase.
To clear the list entirely costs nothing: Click Tools > Internet Options > Clear History button.
Q. My son, who is away at college, was helping me with my computer by email. In one of his messages he used the abbreviation PEBKAC, but I have no idea what that means. Thanks for being there, Mr. M. I love your weekly newsletter and so does my son because I now ask you the questions I was always asking him.
A. I suspect your son was just having a little fun with you by his use of PEBKAC. It’s an acronym that is synonymous with “user error,” but literally stands for "Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair."
Q. I started using Notepad and find that any time I print a page, it always shows the title of "Untitled" at the top, along with a page number. How do I get rid of the “Untitled” title and the page number?
A. That header and footer information appears as a result of what are called the page set-up codes. If you open Notepad (Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad), click File > Page Setup. Next, click the question mark (?) in the upper right-hand corner of the Page Setup dialog box, then click again on the Header and Footer fields to see a list of the available codes. You’ll note that the code &f results in the “Untitled” title, and Page &p results in the page number appearing in the footer. Delete everything in the Header and Footer fields to remove the “Untitled” header and the page number, or insert the appropriate codes for whatever information you would like to appear on each printed page.
