PHOENIX (AP) — Brandon Allen had an impressive 2010 debut with Arizona, hitting a grand slam and making several rangy catches in left field to help the Diamondbacks send the San Diego Padres to their seventh loss in a row, 5-2 yesterday. Chris Young hit his 23rd homer, Barry Enright allowed two runs on nine hits in seven innings and Juan Gutierrez pitched the ninth for his sixth save to help Arizona complete a sweep of the Padres.
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have recalled power-hitting first baseman Brandon Allen and added three others as September call-ups. Infielder Tony Abreu (uh-BRAY'-oo) and right-hander Carlos Rosa also were recalled from Triple-A Reno yesterday. And right-hander Leo Rosales was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. He was 2-0 with an 8.10 ERA in nine games before going on the DL in April with a stress fracture.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have signed Pro Bowl defensive tackle Darnell Dockett to a four-year, $48 million contract extension with $30 million guaranteed. He had two years left on his previous deal, so the new one keeps him under contract through the 2015 season. Dockett was a third-round draft pick out of Florida State in 2004, and has developed into one of the best at his position entering his seventh NFL season.
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) — The Oakland Raiders have plenty of roster moves they need to make before the start of the season. Apparently trading for Matt Leinart (LY'-nurt) isn't one of them. The Raiders are denying an ESPN report saying the team has had discussions about trading for Leinart. The Raiders say they've never discussed acquiring the 27-year-old in a trade from Arizona and that they're "very happy" with their quarterback situation.
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Storm have finally advanced out of the first round of the WNBA playoffs, so now they're turning their attention to the defending champion Phoenix Mercury. Game 1 between the Mercury and Storm is set for tonight in Seattle. Game 2 is set for Sunday in Phoenix and, if necessary, Game 3 will be back in Seattle next Wednesday. The Mercury lost six of their final seven games and finished the regular season 15-19.
