Cardinals draft wide receiver, running back
09:29 AM MST on Monday, April 28, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- The Arizona Cardinals need a third wide receiver behind stars Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin, and they may have found him on the second day of the NFL draft.
The Cardinals used their third-round pick to select Early Doucet, the leading receiver on LSU's national championship team.
His selection made it eight drafts in a row that Arizona has taken a wide receiver.
The Cardinals returned to defense in the fourth round, picking defensive end Kenny Iwebema of Iowa. He was the second player at that position chosen by Arizona. The Cardinals selected defensive end Calais Campbell of Miami in the second round on Saturday.
The team's No. 1 pick Saturday was cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of Tennessee State.
Arizona rounded out its draft by picking running back Timothy Hightower of Richmond in the fifth round, linebacker Chris Harrington of Texas A&M in the sixth round and offensive tackle Brandon Keith of Northern Iowa in the seventh round.
As a senior, Doucet caught 57 passes for 525 yards and five touchdowns, despite being bothered by a groin injury much of the season. He caught 160 for 1,943 yards and 23 scores in his LSU career.
With the departure of Bryant Johnson as a free agent, Doucet will have a shot at the third receiver job.
"We have a number of guys competing for that spot, but this was a talented player, a very good player coming out of high school," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "I think he was the No. 1 receiver prospect in the country at that time. It was just too much talent and production to ignore."
The selection has nothing to do with the status of Boldin, general manager Rod Graves said. Several teams and Boldin's agent have inquired about trading the standout receiver, but the Cardinals have insisted they intend to keep him.
"Obviously I understand people trying to connect the dots," Graves said, "but we fully expect that Anquan Boldin will be playing with us next season. At least that's my vision."
Iwebema, 6-foot-4 and 274 pounds, was often slowed by injuries in his college career.
"That was a position for us that was thin going into the draft, and we feel like we did a good job of addressing that," Whisenhunt said, "not only from a standpoint of young players that add depth, but also where we can have a little bit more of a rotation at that position during the year."
Hightower, 6-1 and 225 pounds, rushed for 1,924 yards last season for Richmond. He was the second player from the school to be drafted this year. Wide receiver Arman Shields went to Oakland in the fourth round. Richmond hadn't had a player drafted since 2000.
"The thing I like about him is he has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder to prove that he belongs," Whisenhunt said of Hightower. "He didn't get invited to the combine but he worked out well for us in the individual workouts and just from watching him in tape study we feel like he is going to be a very good player to add to our mix at running back."
