Wildcats prepare to face Toledo

09:55 AM MST on Friday, September 5, 2008

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona scored 70 points against Idaho in its opener. No wonder Toledo coach Tom Amstutz is concerned as his Rockets prepare to play the Wildcats here Saturday night.

"Any time you put 70 points on the board and shut out your opponent, that's a great accomplishment," Amstutz said. "They did everything right. In a game like that, you can't pick out any areas of weakness from the game film. We will have to prepare and be ready to play our best game."

The Wildcats (1-0) will rely on game film from a year ago to scout Toledo. The Rockets struggled defensively in 2007, allowing 39 points and 444 yards per game.

That has to be good news for quarterback Willie Tuitama and a team coming off its highest point total in 87 years.

Arizona isn't expecting to have it so easy this time out, however.

"We know it is going to be a tough game, and can't take anything for granted just because we scored 70 last week," Arizona receiver Mike Thomas said.

The Wildcats seemingly moved the ball at will last week. Tuitama completed 17 of 21 passes for 179 yards, while Nic Grigsby rushed for 169 yards in the first half alone.

Toledo presents a much tougher challenge. The Rockets have nine defensive starters returning, including their entire secondary.

Toledo's strength is on offense, with receivers Nick Moore and Stephen Williams.

Moore caught 60 passes and scored eight times a year ago, while Williams had 73 receptions with seven scores. They can expect extra attention from Arizona's secondary.

"They have a really good offensive system and they know how to manipulate the system to get those guys the football," Arizona coach Mike Stoops said. "They are big and they have good hands and they are fast. We have to make sure we are very conscious of these two individuals."

Toledo led the Mid-American Conference in total offense a year ago by combining a threat through the air with 1,500-yard rusher Jalen Parmele. Parmele is gone, and the Rockets now are expected to rely a passing attack that might need to put up points if the defense struggles again.

"(Our receivers) have to step up to have a chance to score points against Arizona's talented defense," Amstutz said.
