Hill leads Arizona with double-double
09:43 AM MST on Wednesday, December 3, 2008
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona's Jordan Hill gets lots of treatment between games for back spasms, but once the ball is tipped off he is going after every board, as Loyola Marymount found out in the Wildcats' 84-57 victory on Tuesday.
The Wildcat forward, bothered by a sore back, racked up his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
"I go for every rebound. I will try to snatch it out of (everybody's) hands. That is my mentality," Hill said. "I know I won't get to them all, but that is what I am going for. I want to be a beast."
Hill, who had 12 rebounds by halftime, was one board away against Santa Clara from having double figures in both points and rebounds in every game this season.
The Wildcats 6-foot-10, 230-pound inside muscle made 6 of 10 shots before giving his back some rest, and the Loyola Marymount defense, by sitting out the final 10 minutes.
"I'm really impressed with Hill," Loyola Marymount coach Max Good said. "He's a huge presence inside. He cleans up the boards. When you have a guy like him lurking, the players tend to shoot the ball a little quicker."
Hill's two free throws capped a 9-0 run to start the second half for a 50-24 lead.
What damage Hill wasn't doing inside the lane reserve Zane Johnson did from the outside by scoring a career-high 17 points on 5 of 9 shooting from three-point range. The Wildcats (5-1) made a season-high 12 threes. Nic Wise added 15 points for Arizona, while Chase Budinger had 10.
Jarred DuBois led Loyola Marymount (0-7), which has only seven scholarship players available, with 16 points. LaRon Armstead and Corey Counts had 14 apiece.
Loyola Marymount couldn't create much of a comeback attempt by shooting 33 percent during the game, and missing its opening eight field goal tries in the second half.
Wise scored eight during a 24-2 run, which included 16 straight at one point, to give the Wildcats a 35-17 lead with 4:21 remaining in the first half. "It's like walking through a minefield against a team with as much talent as Arizona," Good said. "We played well in the first half and we were with them for a while there, but a couple of plays and the next thing you know you look at the scoreboard and you are down by double digits."
Arizona had six different players score during the spurt, including five points apiece from Hill and Budinger.
Budinger started the outburst with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer. Wise ended it with back-to-back three-pointers. Loyola Marymount was 1 for 11 from the field during the nearly 10 minute span. The Lions connected on 3 of their last 20 shots in the final 12 minutes to trail 41-24 at halftime.
