ASU cutting three men's sports
06:16 PM MST on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -- Arizona State is dropping men's swimming, men's tennis and wrestling in an effort to save about $1 million per year.
"The decision to discontinue sport programs is a last resort, yet necessary," athletic director Lisa Love said in a statement. "These moves are extremely painful."
Up to 70 athletes will be affected, and six full-time coaching positions will be eliminated, the school said. Head coaches will remain under contract through November.
Athletes in the discontinued programs who choose to remain at ASU will receive their scholarships through their senior year.
ASU will continue to fund 20 sports.
"It is our responsibility to operate a fiscally prudent varsity athletics program," Love said. "The costs of doing business are escalating daily and the costs of maintaining excellence even more so."
