TAMPA BAY, Florida (AP) — Boston financier Jeff Vinik has agreed to buy the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The NHL announced on its Web site Friday that Vinik has purchased Tampa Bay Sports & Entertainment from a group led by Oren Koules and Len Barrie. The deal is contingent on approval from the NHL Board of Governors.

Vinik agreed to buy the team, the company that operates the St. Pete Times Forum, and two parcels of adjacent land. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Vinik is a minority owner of the Red Sox.

Headed into Friday's NHL games, the Lightning are in the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
